XK8 Timing Chain Replacement

This XK8 came in for preventative timing chain work on its 4.0-litre AJ-V8 engine. These engines are known for timing chain tensioner issues, and this one was showing early warning signs that needed addressing before things got expensive.

The front of the engine was stripped down to access the timing system. Once opened up, the extent of wear on the original chains and tensioners was clear, with significant play that would have led to serious engine damage if left unchecked. The corroded engine bay and underside also needed attention while we were in there.

All timing chains, tensioners, and guides were replaced with updated components. The variable valve timing units were inspected and refurbished, and new seals and gaskets were fitted throughout. The water pump was replaced as a precaution, and the front cover was resealed. While the engine was apart, the cam covers were removed, cleaned, and refinished, and all ancillaries were checked over.

The underside received a thorough clean and inspection, with corroded areas treated and the front suspension given attention where needed. Once reassembled and timed correctly, the engine was tested and ran smoothly.

This XK8 now has the peace of mind that comes with a properly sorted timing system, ensuring the V8 will run reliably for years to come without the worry of chain failure.
